Can anyone that has watched Duke tell me what the issue is with Vernon  Carey?

Stats look pretty good for a player ranked 20-30 in the draft

I've read about him a bit, the consensus appears to be that he's basically a highly productive freshman with an outdated style of play. Carey is neither a great leaper nor a great shooter so it's tough to see him fit a role in the nba as a floor spacer or rim roller. He gets most of his production on offense through postups and floaters which are low efficiency shots in the NBA. There are also severe questionmarks about his ability to defend in space.

Expected outcome: Jahlil Okafor (who is also super talented albeit a terrible fit in the modern NBA)

Best outcome: Domantas Sabonis (even though Carey isn't nearly the passer)

At this point I have written him off as a candidate for our 1st round pick and tbh I also struggle to have him as a candidate for the GS pick.

Candidates I like for the DAL 1st:

Josh Green (very athletic 3D wing with a good looking shot)
Aaron Nesmith (incredible shooter for a 6'7 guy, moves a bit like Middleton)
Jah'mius Ramsey (3D SG, love him; elite defensive metrics AND 40+% from three already)
Patrick Williams (skilled combo forward)
Devin Vassel
Precious Achiuwa (PF/C type, a 5 on offense with great leaping and rim rolling, very switchy defender who is super physical; should complement KP really well on both ends tbh)

Candidates I like for the GS 2nd:

Pokusevski (skilled 7 footer with a beatiful shot, long-time project)
Jalen Smith (very good shooter and decent athlete for a PF/C type; not as switchy as Kleber but that's a good comparison upside-wise)
Jordan Nwora (upperclassman who is putting up numbers, I like him but he might just be overwhelmed physically at the NBA level)

Dream scenario:

#20 Josh Green
#31 Pokusevski

Guys who I would not touch:

Isaiah Stewart ==> reminds me so much of Motley here as he is neither a rim roller nor a floor spacer at PF/C, too bulky to defend in space, below the rim-athlete. Like Carey he's extremely productive yet I struggle to see the fit in the NBA.

Carey for the same reasons.

I really really REALLY doubt the Mavs are going to hold onto both picks. I'd be willing to reckon that they actually end up not picking at all or moving very far back.

Either way, I'm really liking Aaron Nesmith from Vanderbilt. Sophomore SF who is putting up huge numbers at Vanderbilt. I think he could be a valuable scorer off the bench.
14x All-Star, 12x all-NBA, 1x MVP, 1x Finals MVP, 1 NBA Championship: Dirk Nowitzki, the man, the myth, the legend.

Josh Green would be good, need a new Aussie for the team Smile

Azubuike seems like another one that is being underrated massively.

If the Mavs can buy a mid-late 2nd to grab him that could be good value.
Not a modern style big but having 1 massive dude to counter the few gun bigs will be useful.
Boban is just too slow to use unless you go out of your way to feed him on offence.

I wonder if the Mavs keep their picks if they will take overseas players to stash away for a season or 2.
There a couple of 18-19 yr olds from Europe in the 15-40 range that could be good candidates for this.
Theo Maledon PG 6'4" 174lbs
Aleksej Pokusevski 7' PF 200lbs

Both are very young and raw still so staying in Europe could be an option.

I was looking at this kid for the GSW 2nd. Serbian/Greek

Tankathon had him late first round.

That´s an interesting option. Especially because the Mavs are lacking roster spots.

On a side note: Koponen is 31 now. 2-3 more years and he will have enough experience to make it in the NBA.  Drafted in 2007 and the Mavs are still holding his rights.

Personally, I like his teammate Devin Vassell a lot more.

His draft stock is a bit over the place, late lottery to late first. I think he will be gone by the Mavs' selection when it's all said and done but if there's an opportunity to trade up for him, I'd highly consider it. He has all the makings of an elite 3/D player.

Wonder what will happen here. Could they hold the draft before the play-offs? Use the current standings for draft order and play-off seeding. Given the separation between the 8th and 9th seed in each conference, there can´t be any complaints. Even if you allow for the games to even out at 67 (theoretically) Memphis and Orlando/Brooklyn would still retain their positions.

I tend to agree.  The key to revenues is getting the post-season played.  So, think of any regular season games played from here as a means to that end.  Thirty days from now all dates that were on the schedule will be gone and a new schedule will have to be made up from scratch.  It will likely be a very limited schedule to basically get teams ready for the playoffs...almost like pre-season

So, do you count those games?  Are they exhibition games?

1.  It creates an unbalanced schedule, which isn't any more fair that simply cutting things off as of 3/11.
2.  It doesn't change who qualifies for the playoffs (only seeding and draft order)
3.  Teams who are going home as soon as these playoff-prep games are over have almost zero incentive to play hard.

To me, they should just freeze things where they are (self-serving from a Mav's draft perspective), play 3-5 exhibition games and get into whatever playoff format they come up with.  They'll go past the typical season-end date in June to get as many playoff games in as they can.  But, there is some date out there that is too far and interferes too much with the next season.  They will shorten series to best of five if they have to or something even more creative.  But, the focus will absolutely be on the playoffs and not the regular season.

Guys in our range that I think would be excellent additions:

A lot of good PGs, but too high. Rather have Brunson than trade for higher pick. I'm excluding top 10 guys because I'm not sure we can get them)

1) Devin Vassell (SG/Florida State) = TRADE UP TO GET THIS GUY. Our 1st + GSW 2nd should do the trick.
2) Tyler Bey (SF/Colorado) = Only weakness is his age (22), but his game is so NBA ready and well-rounded that I don't mind that much.
3) Venrnon Carey Jr. (C/Duke) = Offensive Beast.
4) Paul Reed (PF/DePaul) = Defensive Beast.

Without March Madness and European Championships there is an opportunity for teams that scout well or have excellent relationships.  Not sure if that applies to us or not, but talent pool was already rather flat and now teams will be picking with one eye tied behind their back.

some draft sites have listed him as a probable first rd pick late 20s. could rise further.

I am wondering if it could be easier to trade up in this draft.
If teams have limited chances for more scouting then fewer teams will be in love with players and could be more willing to trade down.

If it is possible to trade up then Okongwu is very intriguing.
Playing him with KP would create an awesome defence.
KP, Maxi and Okongwu would be a block party ?

Obviously he has shooting issue but adding another elite defender would be huge.

The name I'm interested in in the first round is Isaiah Stewart who is currently projected close to our pick. Very similar to Okongwu in size and strengths. The issue I see with him is I think he'll have a really good combine showing which will raise his stock quite a bit more this year since scouts won't have the Tournament to add to their evaluations (although not getting his team to the tournament will most definitely be a negative still).
